How the G1 test works

The Ontario G1 knowledge test has 40 multiple-choice questions split into two parts. You must pass each part separately.

Part 1: Rules of the Road

Pass: 16/20 (80%)

Questions about traffic laws, right-of-way, speed limits, licensing rules, and safe driving practices.

Part 2: Road Signs

20 questions

Pass: 16/20 (80%)

Questions about traffic signs, traffic lights, pedestrian signals, and pavement markings.

You must pass each part with at least 16/20. Getting 32/40 overall is not enough if one part is below 16.

Ontario Graduated Licensing System

Ontario uses a graduated licensing system with three stages. The G1 knowledge test is the first step.

G1

Level One - Learner

12 months minimum (8 with driver education). Written knowledge test. Must drive with a fully licensed supervisor.

G2

Level Two - Intermediate

12 months minimum. Road test required. Can drive independently with some restrictions.

G

Full Licence

Full driving privileges. Valid for 5 years. Highway driving road test required.

What is the minimum age for a G1 licence?

You must be at least 16 years old to apply for a driver's licence in Ontario. You will need to pass a vision test and the G1 knowledge test at a DriveTest centre.

How long does the graduated licensing process take?

The minimum time is 20 months: 12 months at G1 level (or 8 months if you complete an approved driver education course) plus 12 months at G2 level.
